Quick answer: Yes. James Hardie fiber cement siding is significantly heavier than vinyl or engineered wood, and it needs a solid, code-compliant substrate, typically minimum 7/16″ plywood or 1/2″ OSB structural sheathing, behind it to hold fasteners and support its weight. Installing Hardie over thin, damaged, or missing sheathing is a leading cause of the sagging, gapping, and seam separation homeowners see within a year or two of a new siding job. |
Every siding material puts different demands on the wall behind it. Vinyl siding is light, roughly half a pound per square foot, and it hangs loosely on a nailing hem, so it tolerates a less-than-perfect substrate. Fiber cement is a different animal. James Hardie lap and panel siding weighs several times more than vinyl per square foot, and unlike vinyl, it’s face-nailed or blind-nailed directly into the wall assembly. Every fastener has to bite into something solid enough to hold that weight for the life of the product.
That’s what sheathing does. A continuous layer of structural wood panel, plywood or OSB, over the studs gives every course of siding a uniform, solid nailing surface, ties the wall together for wind and shear bracing, and gives the weather-resistive barrier (housewrap) something dependable to attach to. Skip it, install it too thin, or let an old, damaged layer stay in place, and the siding above it has nothing but soft or inconsistent backing to grab onto.
We inspect a lot of siding jobs, our own, and other contractors’ work homeowners call us about after the fact. A recurring pattern shows up on homes where the installation crew went straight to hanging Hardie without confirming (or replacing) the sheathing underneath. The photos below are from one such job we walked recently.

None of these problems are cosmetic in the long run. Gaps like these let water behind the cladding, which is exactly what fiber cement and the wall assembly behind it are supposed to be protected from. Left alone, that moisture intrusion leads to rot, mold, and much more expensive repairs than the sheathing would have cost in the first place.
“This is why we prefer to utilize LP SmartSide Diamond Kote with RigidStack, or when we do utilize Hardie, we mandate either a half-inch OSB or a 7/16″ plywood backer first. This keeps these issues from ever occurring, but it does add cost,” one of our project managers noted after walking a job site where another company had skipped this step entirely.
That’s the standard we hold every Hardie installation to, whether we’re re-siding a whole home or patching in a repair: confirm what’s behind the old siding, replace any sheathing that’s damaged, undersized, or missing, and only then install the new fiber cement over it. It’s an extra step, and an extra cost, that a lower bid may have skipped. It’s also the difference between siding that lies flat and stays sealed for 30 years and siding that starts gapping before the first winter is over.
Fiber cement isn’t the only durable siding option, and it isn’t always the right one. On many projects we recommend LP SmartSide, specifically LP Diamond Kote® prefinished panels installed over LP RigidStack®, a rainscreen system built to be 375% stronger than standard engineered wood and resistant to hail up to 1.75″. Because SmartSide is lighter than fiber cement and the RigidStack system creates its own drainage plane and mounting surface, the sheathing tolerances that matter so much with Hardie are less likely to become a problem, without giving up durability, a factory finish, or a long warranty (LP backs SmartSide with a 50-year substrate warranty and Diamond Kote with a 30-year no-fade warranty, both roughly double Hardie’s typical 30-year siding and 15-year color terms).
The bigger structural difference is that LP SmartSide is itself a structural product, rated to carry its own weight across a 32-inch span, so it holds up fine installed direct-to-stud even if a fastener misses a stud. Fiber cement is not a structural product, which is exactly why it depends on that plywood or OSB backer discussed above to keep every fastener anchored. LP SmartSide is also available in 16-foot runs, compared to Hardie’s 12-foot runs, meaning fewer seams across a typical wall. And when we install Diamond Kote over RigidStack specifically, the system is designed so there isn’t a single face nail visible anywhere on the finished siding, which gives a cleaner, more finished look than a face-nailed installation.

Proper sheathing adds real cost to a siding project, material, labor, and disposal of whatever’s being replaced. It’s tempting for a contractor competing on price to skip it, especially on a re-side where the old siding is coming off anyway and it’s easy to assume the wall underneath is “good enough.”
But the cost of doing it wrong is almost always higher: gapped and buckled siding that needs to come back off, water damage to the sheathing and framing that was supposed to be protected, mold remediation, and in many cases a manufacturer warranty that never covered an out-of-spec installation to begin with. If a bid on your siding job doesn’t mention sheathing at all, that’s worth asking about before you sign anything.
Some Hardie products are rated for direct-to-stud installation in specific configurations, but most homes, and most local codes, call for continuous structural sheathing for wind/shear bracing regardless of the siding manufacturer’s minimum. HRTI’s practice is to install fiber cement over 1/2″ OSB or 7/16″ plywood on every job, which also gives a uniform, solid nailing surface across the whole wall.
The old siding has to come off first. During tear-off, a good crew checks every wall for soft spots, water staining, delamination, or rot, especially around windows, doors, and the bottom courses near grade. If you’re getting bids, ask whether sheathing inspection and replacement (if needed) is included, or treated as a change order.
Neither is universally “better”, they’re different materials with different strengths. Fiber cement is extremely fire- and rot-resistant and very rigid; engineered wood siding like SmartSide is lighter, often faster to install, and, with a system like RigidStack — can be very impact-resistant. HRTI installs both and will recommend the one that fits your home, budget, and priorities.
Usually not. Manufacturer warranties typically require installation according to their instructions and local code, and a substrate problem caused by a contractor skipping proper backing is generally treated as an installation defect, not a product defect. That’s a conversation to have directly with your installer and the manufacturer, but it’s exactly why getting the substrate right up front matters.
It varies by project size and how much of the existing sheathing needs replacing, but it’s a meaningful line item, typically hundreds to a few thousand dollars on an average home, not tens of dollars. It’s also far cheaper than fixing gapped siding, water damage, and rot a few years down the road.
