Boulder, Chautauqua Park

Project Details:

HRTI was delighted to be invited as a key team member of this Boulder based Frank Lloyd Wright exterior remodel in the shadow of the Flat Irons of Chautauqua Park. We teamed up with the homeowners to design a modern feel as well as to decrease the carbon footprint for this Boulder family. After spending time with the owners to understand their goals, we offered three different design options to start the conversation for the finished product.

We started with a replacement of their old windows with modern Loewen Windows and Doors complete with 3 coatings of LowE and Argon gas fill. We also changed the shape of the front windows and added a pergola as well as a light colored wood front door to add an inviting feel to the front of the home. By adding the pergola, we increased the street presence of the home front. Additionally by adding a front door that contrasted the colors of the rest of the home we were able to visually bring the door “forward” without having to physically move it. Hardie Reveal “panel and channel”, with aluminum channeling accents, added an artistic and modern feel to the front of the home which we contrasted with cedar stained accents between the front windows. Last of all we ran a 10 inch deep custom gutter to help tie the pergola into the home structure.

In the rear of the home, we added insulation and used stucco to keep costs within budget but added wood accents to keep the warmth of the property intact. We brought their rear deck up to date with some minor repairs as well as a custom railing. Last of all, we redesigned the garage area and added a new garage door from CHI and raw steel around the door. We allowed the raw steel to weather for a few weeks which created a rich patina then sealed the door to limit further degradation.
